Chapter 2 - The Static of TruthThe giant screen flickered, casting an eerie blue glow across the altar.

At first, there was only static—a loud, piercing hiss accompanied by violently shaking video feed. The camera seemed to have been propped up hastily on a dusty wooden table inside a cramped, windowless room. Dim, flickering fluorescent light buzzed overhead.

Then, a voice cut through the speakers. It was deep, raspy, and unmistakably heavy with exhaustion and terror. It was Elena’s father, Richard Vance—a brilliant cybersecurity engineer who had mysteriously vanished six years ago, declared legally dead after a tragic laboratory fire.

“If you’re watching this,” the video began, the image shuddering as Richard adjusted the lens with trembling hands, “it means Max managed to return. Or... God help us all, he found you first.”

In the front row, Elena’s mother let out a sharp gasp, clutching her pearls as she stared at the screen in sheer disbelief. Richard looked terrible on the tape. His cheeks were hollow, his beard unkempt, and the dark circles under his eyes spoke of months without sleep.

“I’m recording this from a secure bunker beneath Sector 4,” Richard continued, coughing hoarsely. “If you are Elena, my sweet girl... you need to listen to me very carefully. Everything you think you know about the night of the fire is a lie. Max didn't save me. Max didn't try to pull me out.”

On the altar, Max froze. The color drained entirely from his face, leaving him a sickening shade of grey. He stared at the screen as if looking at a monster rising from the grave.

“He locked the door from the outside,” Richard’s voice echoed in the silent cathedral, every word landing like a physical blow. “And the person standing beside him in the hallway... wasn’t an assistant. It was the original Max.”

The church erupted.

Gasps turned into screams of shock. People stood up from their pews, craning their necks to look at the groom.

Elena spun around to face him, tears streaming freely down her face, cutting tracks through her wedding makeup. "What did he mean, Max? Who is the original Max?"
