My corporate email inbox received a lengthy, emotionally manipulative message from my father.

It wasn't an apology. Men like Thomas Crest didn't apologize; they justified.

“Evelyn, your mother’s health has deteriorated significantly following the scandal with Jason and the public humiliation surrounding Brittany’s disappearance. Family is family, regardless of mistakes. We expect you to drop this cold, unforgiving attitude and join us for Thanksgiving at the suburban estate. Brittany may have made poor choices, but blood ties cannot simply be erased.”

I stared at the screen for three seconds.

Then, I clicked Forward, attached a copy of my legal name change documentation (officially dropping Crest and adopting my grandmother’s maiden surname, Vance—a subtle homage to the brilliant attorney who helped me secure my freedom), and added a single sentence reply:

“My bloodline was audited, bankruptcies were declared, and all toxic accounts have been permanently closed. Do not contact this address again.”

I hit Send, cleared the trash folder, and felt a profound, beautiful weight lift entirely off my shoulders.
