Chapter 7 - The Confession in the Dark“Come inside,” I said stiffly, opening the cabin door and gesturing toward the warm living room.

Eleanor walked in, her steps unsteady. She sank into a leather armchair near the stone fireplace, staring down at her trembling hands. For a long time, the only sound was the crackle of the wood fire.
“You think you know why Jason destroyed his life,” Eleanor began, her voice barely above a whisper. “You think it was greed. You think it was ambition.”
“He committed corporate fraud and betrayed his wife with her own sister,” I replied flatly. “What else is there to understand?”
Eleanor looked up, her eyes swimming with a mixture of terror and deep, generational shame.
“It’s not just greed, Evelyn. It’s a compulsion. A curse that runs through the Mercer bloodline. Every generation, the oldest son... they are incapable of faithfulness. They seek out destruction because stability terrifies them.”
“That’s a convenient excuse for a lack of basic human decency,” I countered.
“Listen to me!” Eleanor snapped, her voice suddenly sharp with a desperate authority that commanded silence. She leaned forward, gripping the arms of the chair. “Ten years ago, when you and Jason first started trying for a family, do you remember why the doctors said you couldn't conceive?”
My breath caught in my throat. The room suddenly felt suffocatingly hot.
“The clinic results... they showed a severe hormonal imbalance and uterine scarring,” I whispered, my heart beginning to hammer against my ribs. “The specialists said it was a biological anomaly.”

Eleanor closed her eyes, a single tear cutting a clean path down her weathered cheek.
“It wasn't an anomaly, Evelyn. It was engineered.”
