Chapter 4 - The Unraveling in SuburbiaWhile Jason was fighting fires at his law firm and trying to explain to his senior partners why his credit had evaporated overnight, Brittany was facing a harsh reality check of her own.

With Jason’s corporate cards frozen, the luxury lifestyle she had envisioned—complete with twin nurseries, designer strollers, and a rent-free suburban mansion—vanished like a mirage.

On Thursday evening, my mother showed up unannounced at my downtown apartment building.

The security guard buzzed her up, and when she stepped out of the elevator, she looked ten years older. The haughty, perfectly polished matriarch who had sipped champagne while celebrating my husband’s betrayal was gone, replaced by a desperate woman clutching her designer handbag like a shield.

“Evelyn,” she stammered, stepping into my entryway without waiting for an invitation. “You have to do something. Jason is losing his mind. He says the firm is launching an internal investigation into his expense reports, and Brittany... Brittany is beside herself.”

I leaned against the kitchen island, holding a mug of tea. “Why are you telling me this, Mother? You got what you wanted. Jason is going to be the father of your precious grandchildren.”

“He has no money!” my mother hissed, her voice cracking with indignation. “The house is facing foreclosure because the mortgage transfers were blocked! He can’t even pay for Brittany’s prenatal care clinic upfront! How could you be so cold? He was your husband!”

“He was,” I agreed, taking a slow sip of tea. “And now he’s someone else’s problem. Or rather, Brittany’s problem. Isn’t that what you always wanted? For Brittany to have the life she deserves?”

“Evelyn, please,” my mother’s voice broke, actual tears finally springing to her eyes. “Your father’s heart condition... if the firm fires Jason publicly, the scandal will destroy our social standing in the community. People will talk.”

“Let them talk,” I said softly, walking over to the door and pulling it wide open. “After all, Mother... love finds a way.”
