Chapter 8 - The Poisoned Well“What are you talking about?” I demanded, standing up from my chair, my voice rising. “Engineered by whom?”

Eleanor opened her eyes, looking at me with absolute devastation.

“By me. And by my husband,” she confessed, her voice shaking violently. “When Jason first brought you home, I investigated your family background. I saw your brilliance, your ambition, your iron will. I knew that if you and Jason had children, you would run his life, his finances, and our family estate with absolute authority. My son was weak, and I couldn't allow a woman like you to anchor him.”

The world tilted on its axis.

“You... what did you do?” I whispered, the words tasting like ash in my mouth.

“During your first year of marriage, when you fell ill with that mysterious viral infection and spent two weeks in a private Boston clinic funded by our family trust... the physician was my personal brother-in-law,” Eleanor sobbed, covering her face with her shaking hands. “He administered a targeted hormonal blocker disguised as a post-viral recovery treatment. It caused irreversible scarring and systemic infertility. We ensured you could never carry a child.”

The room spun. Ten years of grief. Ten years of crying in clinic bathrooms, injecting hormones, blaming my own body for failing my marriage, holding my husband’s hand while we mourned phantom babies.

All of it—every single tear, every single heartache—was a manufactured lie created by the monster sitting across from me.

“You destroyed me,” I whispered, the rage inside me freezing into an absolute, razor-sharp edge. “You and your precious family destroyed my entire life over paranoia.”

“And karma has come back to collect,” Eleanor cried, her voice breaking completely. “Because the twins... the twins Brittany is carrying?”

She looked up at me, her face deathly pale, her eyes wide with a horrific realization.

“They aren't Jason’s.”
