Chapter 20 - The Unbroken HorizonLater that morning, I walked through the glass double doors of Vance Risk Analysis & Corporate Integrity.

The reception area was sleek, minimalist, and illuminated by natural light pouring through floor-to-ceiling windows. My name was engraved on the brushed-aluminum wall in clean, bold letters. No hyphens. No shared titles. No baggage.

Maya greeted me with the morning briefing files, her eyes bright with excitement.

“We have three new corporate mergers to review today, Ms. Vance. The board is ready when you are.”

I took the files, feeling the familiar, grounding weight of responsibility and power in my hands.

Jason was rotting in a federal prison cell. Brittany was stranded in legal quicksand in Europe. My parents were living in the hollow echo of a suburban home built on pretense and shame.

And I was standing exactly where I belonged—at the very center of a world I had engineered, structured, and protected entirely on my own terms.
