Chapter 16 - An Unexpected EncounterAs the holiday season reached its peak, I attended a high-profile charity gala at the Art Institute of Chicago, representing my firm as a keynote sponsor.

The grand hall was filled with city officials, corporate leaders, and philanthropists.

While standing near a towering neoclassical marble pillar, reviewing the evening’s guest list on my tablet, a soft voice spoke beside me.

“Evelyn?”

I turned my head. Standing there was an older woman wrapped in a heavy mink stole, leaning slightly on an ebony cane. Eleanor Mercer.

She looked a decade older than when she had visited my cabin in Michigan. Her face was pale, etched with deep lines of exhaustion and the quiet shame of a fallen dynasty.

“Mrs. Mercer,” I greeted evenly, not bothering to offer a handshake.

Eleanor swallowed hard, her eyes looking down at the floor before rising to meet mine with a strange mix of humility and dread.

“I heard about your promotion to Managing Director,” she whispered. “It’s... impressive. You’ve completely rebuilt everything.”

“A good architect always knows how to salvage a site after a demolition,” I replied smoothly.

Eleanor let out a bitter, hollow laugh. “The family estate in Boston was seized by the bank last week. Jason’s trust is entirely depleted. There’s nothing left of the Mercer name, Evelyn. You won.”

“This isn't a game, Eleanor, and it certainly isn't a victory,” I said, my voice dropping its warmth, turning sharp and cold. “This is simply reality. You built a legacy on deception, control, and cruelty. You got exactly what your engineering warranted.”

She flinched, turning her head away as a tear slipped down her cheek. Without another word, she turned and disappeared into the crowd, swallowed up by the very society that had once worshiped her name.
