Chapter 1 - THE TALE OF TWO TESTSThe hospital room felt like a cage. Caleb returned an hour after being kicked out, his face pale, holding a packet of legal-looking forms.

"I’m not trying to hurt you, Brooke," he said, his voice brittle. "I just... I need to be sure."
"You need to be sure?" I repeated, my voice ice-cold. "We have been married nine years. We went through three rounds of IVF. We held each other through the miscarriages. And now, because of a blood type on a chart, you’re acting like I’m a stranger?"
"My mother—"
"Your mother is a bitter woman who has been looking for a reason to tear us apart since our wedding day," I snapped.

He didn't argue. He just set the forms on the tray. "I already ordered the private test. The lab technician is coming in an hour."
I didn't cry. I felt a weird, detached calm. "Fine. But when the results come back, Caleb, don’t expect me to be here waiting for an apology."
