Chapter 8 - THE STOLEN LIFEWe tracked the Millers to a suburban home two towns over. When the police arrived, it wasn't a criminal standoff. It was a tragedy.

The Millers were a young, desperate couple who had lost their own baby during delivery. They were devastated, having been handed my child by the nurse and told he was their own.

As I held my real son—my Miles—in my arms, the rage I felt toward the hospital was eclipsed by a strange sympathy for the parents who had been forced to give him back.

But then, I saw Margaret in the hospital parking lot. She wasn't relieved. She was on the phone, looking furious.

"I don't care about the error!" she was hissing. "I told you to make sure he was the one! If he doesn't have the Vane blood, he’s useless to us!"
