Chapter 1 - The Face of the VoidThe metallic click of the padlock echoing through the ancient stone cathedral sounded less like a mechanism opening and more like a final judgment. As the king lifted the heavy iron-and-wood shell away, the suffocating silence of the crowd was instantly pierced by a collective intake of breath so sharp it felt like a physical wind.

Princess Elina stood bathed in the golden flicker of hundreds of candles, her eyes finally exposed to the world for the first time in over a decade.
Or rather, the absence of eyes.
Where mortal flesh, skin, bone, and features should have rested, there was only a swirling, bottomless abyss of absolute darkness—a living void that seemed to swallow the very light cascading from the stained-glass windows. Stars burned in miniature constellations deep within her hollow skull, shifting and twisting like galaxies trapped behind a fragile veil of bone. There was no nose, no mouth, no normal human visage. Just a smooth, pale expanse of skin that melted seamlessly into a cosmic emptiness, pulsing with a faint, eerie luminescence.
Prince Richard staggered backward, his boots sliding against the polished stone floor. His face turned ashen, his hands trembling violently as he pointed a shaking finger at his bride.
"Monster..." he choked out, the word escaping his throat in a ragged whisper. "She... she has no face! She's a creature of the dark!"

Panic erupted instantly. Women shrieked, covering their eyes; noblemen drew their swords defensively as if expecting the abyss to reach out and consume them; and the grand cathedral devolved into an absolute riot of terror. The king dropped the heavy iron helmet, his face collapsing into a mask of bitter, resigned despair. He had tried to protect the world from her—and more importantly, he had tried to protect her from a world too narrow-minded to understand the miracle of what she truly was.
"Silence!" the king roared, his voice cracking with aged fury. But it was too late. The illusion was shattered. Prince Richard turned on his heel and fled down the central aisle, shouting that the marriage was annulled, leaving Elina standing alone in the center of the chaos, the cold wind of rejection blowing directly into her heart.
