Chapter 1 - THE SHADOW OVER THE CHAPEL STAINED GLASSThe morning sun filtered through the centuries-old stained glass of St. Jude’s Cathedral, casting jagged patterns of sapphire and crimson across the polished mahogany pews.

In the vestry behind the altar, Ryan adjusted his black velvet bow tie, checking his reflection in the gilt-edged mirror. He looked sharp, wealthy, and completely triumphant.
Where is the wedding planner with the final seating charts? Ryan snapped, turning to his best man, Julian, who was lazily scrolling through his phone.
Relax, man, Julian murmured, sliding his phone into his pocket. Everything’s locked down. The caterers are set, the reception hall at the Drake Hotel is prepped, and your precious Lauren is upstairs getting her veil pinned.
Ryan exhaled, a smug grin spreading across his face. He glanced down at his gold-plated Rolex, noting the time. It was nearly eleven. In less than an hour, the doors would open, and Lauren would walk down the aisle. But a strange, lingering itch of anticipation kept pulling his mind back to a single phone call he had received earlier that morning.
He had called Mia just to twist the knife. He had expected her to break—to sob into the phone, to curse his name, or to hang up in humiliated despair. Instead, her voice had been chillingly calm. Proof. That single word had lingered in his ear long after the line went dead.
She’s not coming, Ryan muttered to himself, shaking his head. She’s probably sitting in some cramped apartment in Chicago, crying over old photo albums, realizing she’s nothing without this last name.
You talking about your ex-wife? Julian asked, raising an eyebrow. Why’d you invite her anyway? Risking drama on your wedding day seems like a rookie move, even for you.
I wanted her to see what a real family looks like, Ryan said, his eyes narrowing. She spent seven years crying over empty cribs, calling me broken because I wanted an heir. Lauren gave me a son—well, she's pregnant with my child, and she actually knows how to keep a man satisfied. I wanted Mia to witness her final obsolescence.
Julian laughed, clapping Ryan on the shoulder. Well, if she does show up, security will toss her out before she can even blink. Don't sweat it. Focus on the empire you’re building today. Vance-Brooks Enterprises was officially stamped and filed this morning. You’re bulletproof, Ryan.
May you like
Ryan smiled, the lingering unease vanishing beneath the weight of his own arrogance. He was bulletproof. With Lauren’s high-society connections and the sudden influx of mysterious capital that had funded his latest commercial acquisition, he was untouchable.
Little did he know, fifty miles away at Northwestern Memorial Hospital, a newborn baby girl was resting peacefully in a bassinet, bearing a birth certificate with a secret that would shatter his empire before the rice could even hit the church steps.
