Chapter 11 - THE SHADOWS OF THE FEDERAL DETENTION CENTER

The bleak, concrete monolith of the Metropolitan Correctional Center in downtown Chicago loomed under a heavy, overcast autumn sky. Inside visiting booth 4B, the air smelled of industrial disinfectant and stale institutional coffee. The transparent partition separating the visitor’s side from the prisoner's side was smudged with the fingerprints of a hundred broken men.
Ryan Brooks sat hunched over in his orange jumpsuit, his wrists threaded through the heavy steel security cuffs bolted to the stainless-steel table. The immaculate, tailored custom suits and slicked-back charm were entirely gone. His hair was unwashed, falling over a face hollowed out by weeks of stress, humiliation, and the crushing realization that his entire life had vanished behind a locked door.
The heavy steel door clicked open, and Julian—his former best man, who had managed to slip through the federal net by turning state’s evidence early—slouched into the booth, sliding onto the stool opposite him.
You look like hell, Ryan, Julian muttered, tossing a packet of sugar into a cup of lukewarm water.
Don't start with me, Julian, Ryan snapped, his voice hoarse and cracked. Where are the lawyers? Why hasn't the appellate team filed for bail modification? Your father said we had offshore contingency reserves!
Julian laughed—a dry, bitter sound. My father cut ties the minute the SEC subpoenas hit his desk. Vance-Brooks Enterprises is liquidated, Ryan. The courts seized every corporate account, every subsidiary, and every personal asset tied to the capital from the Carter trust. You're broke. Legally, financially, and completely.
Ryan gripped the edge of the steel table so hard his knuckles turned white, the handcuffs clinking sharply against the metal. It’s Mia. This is all her doing. She orchestrated this from the beginning—concealing the pregnancy, gathering the bank records, walking down that aisle like a goddamned executioner. I’ll make her pay. When I get out of here—
You’re not getting out of here anytime soon, Ryan, Julian interrupted flatly, leaning across the table. The U.S. Attorney has added three counts of wire fraud and corporate perjury to your indictment. You’re looking at fifteen to twenty years in a federal penitentiary. Mia didn't just beat you, man. She dismantled you. And the worst part? While you're rotting in here, she’s living in that sprawling Greenwich estate raising your daughter, completely untouchable.

Ryan stared blankly at the stainless-steel surface, the blood draining entirely from his face. The arrogance that had fueled his entire adult life evaporated, leaving behind a cold, paralyzing terror.
Outside the detention center, miles away from the bleak concrete walls, Mia Carter sat on the sunlit stone terrace of her Greenwich estate, watching baby Clara sleep peacefully in her bassinet, completely unaware of the wreckage left in her wake.
