Chapter 8 - THE RECKONING AT THE DRAKE HOTELBy one o'clock in the afternoon, the grand ballroom of the Drake Hotel—booked for three hundred guests, lavish floral arrangements, and a five-tier wedding cake—was completely empty.

The caterers were packing up untouched trays of champagne glasses and caviar canapés in stunned silence. The string quartet had packed their instruments and left through the service elevators twenty minutes earlier.

Mia stood alone in the center of the sprawling ballroom, looking out the massive arched windows that overlooked Lake Michigan. The water was a deep, restless blue under the autumn sky, churning with whitecaps.

The double doors swung open, and Agent Vance walked in, holding a thick file folder under his arm.

They’re both being booked at the federal detention center downtown, Agent Vance said, stopping a few feet behind her. Lauren’s father tried to intercede with a team of high-priced corporate lawyers, but once he saw the wire transfers linking his daughter directly to the Carter trust accounts, he dropped her faster than a bad stock.

And Ryan? Mia asked without turning around.

Ryan is realizing that the empire he thought he built was built on sand, Agent Vance replied. Without your grandmother’s inheritance as seed capital, Vance-Brooks Enterprises never existed. Every property, every vehicle, every share of stock he claimed to own is tied to the frozen assets. He’s facing twenty years on federal fraud charges alone.

Mia nodded slowly, the tension finally draining from her shoulders. Good.

What about you, Mia? Agent Vance asked gently. You’ve got a newborn baby, a massive estate to reclaim through probate court, and a whole new life ahead of you. How are you holding up?

I’m holding up just fine, Agent Vance, Mia said, turning around with a faint, genuine smile touching her lips. In fact, for the first time in seven years, I can finally breathe.

She thanked the federal investigator, picked up her leather folder and designer tote bag, and walked out of the empty ballroom toward the elevators.
