Chapter 9 - THE NEW DAWN AT GREENWICHTwo weeks later, the crisp Chicago air gave way to a brilliant Indian summer afternoon.

Mia’s ancestral estate in Greenwich—a sprawling property surrounded by ancient oaks and iron gates—was bathed in golden sunlight. The house, which had sat empty and neglected during her marriage to Ryan, was now alive with warmth, freshly cut flowers, and the soft, rhythmic hum of a home reclaimed.
Upstairs in the sunny nursery, baby Clara lay awake in her white wooden bassinet, kicking her tiny legs and cooing softly as sunlight danced across her face.
Mia sat in a comfortable rocking chair by the bay window, holding a cup of Earl Grey tea while reviewing the probate court documents that officially restored her grandmother’s estate and dismantled every trace of Ryan Brooks’s corporate footprint.
The front doorbell chimed—a gentle, melodious sound that echoed through the high-ceilinged hallways.
A moment later, Dr. Evelyn Vance stepped into the nursery, carrying a small, beautifully wrapped gift box tied with a yellow ribbon.
Look at this little angel, Dr. Vance whispered, walking over to the bassinet and smiling down at Clara. She’s getting bigger every day, Mia. How are you sleeping?
Like a person who doesn't share a bed with a narcissist, Mia laughed, setting her tea down and standing up to hug her friend. Thank you for coming by, Evelyn.
I wouldn't miss it, Dr. Vance said, handing over the gift box. Besides, I wanted to see the wreckage for myself. Word on the street is that Ryan Brooks’s trial is going to be televised next month. Prosecutors are calling it one of the largest white-collar fraud cases in Illinois history.

Mia untied the yellow ribbon, lifting the lid to reveal a delicate silver rattle engraved with Clara’s initials. Let him have his day in court, Mia said softly. I’m not looking backward anymore. My focus is right here.
She walked back to the window, looking out over the expansive green lawns that stretched toward the horizon. The driveway was clear, the gates were secure, and the shadows of the past had finally been swept away by the fierce, unyielding grace of motherhood.
