Chapter 24 - THE COLD REALITY OF THE COURTHOUSE STEPSBack in Chicago, the legal fallout surrounding the corporate fraud trial of the decade was finally drawing to its final chapter. Outside the federal district courthouse, a solitary camera crew lingered in the summer heat, capturing the daily comings and goes of attorneys and defendants wrapping up settlement negotiations.

Lauren Vance walked down the courthouse steps, shielding her face behind large dark sunglasses. Her cooperation agreement with federal prosecutors had spared her a prison sentence, but her reputation in Chicago high society was permanently charred. Former friends looked away when she walked into restaurants; elite country clubs had revoked her memberships; and her family name was now synonymous with the biggest white-collar scandal of the decade.
At the bottom of the steps, a sleek black town car idled by the curb. The rear door opened, and a middle-aged attorney stepped out, blocking Lauren’s path.
Ms. Vance? the attorney asked calmly, holding out a manila legal packet.
Lauren stopped, her breath catching. What is this? More subpoenas? I’ve already turned over all my bank records. I’ve cooperated with the U.S. Attorney’s office completely.
It’s not from the U.S. Attorney, the lawyer replied evenly. It’s a civil settlement release from the Carter Foundation. By fulfilling the terms of your cooperation agreement and testifying against the co-conspirators, Mia Carter has formally waived all remaining civil damages against you. You are legally free of any financial debt related to the trust fund embezzlement.
Lauren stared at the manila packet, her hands trembling as she reached out and took it. Why? she whispered, her voice cracking. After everything I did... why would she let me go?

Because Mia Carter doesn't waste energy on ghosts, the attorney said simply, turning around and stepping back into his car. She’s too busy building a future to look backward. Good day, Ms. Vance.
Lauren stood alone on the scorching concrete of the courthouse steps, clutching the legal release to her chest as the town car pulled away into the Chicago traffic, leaving her to face a world where she had to rebuild her life entirely from scratch.
