Chapter 2 - THE DISCHARGE AT NORTHWESTERN MEMORIALThe sterile smell of antiseptic and warm baby powder filled Room 412 of Northwestern Memorial Hospital. Mia Carter sat on the edge of the adjustable hospital bed, her body still throbbing with the physical toll of a harrowing labor, but her mind was sharper, clearer, and more lethal than it had ever been.

On the bedside table lay a sleek leather folder. Inside were documents that represented years of systematic betrayal: bank statements showing unauthorized wire transfers from her grandmother’s trust account, corporate filings linking the shell company to Vance-Brooks Enterprises, and a court-certified DNA test confirming beyond a shadow of a doubt that Baby Girl Carter was Ryan Brooks’s biological child.
The door clicked open, and Dr. Evelyn Vance—no relation to Lauren, but a pediatric specialist Mia had trusted implicitly—stepped inside carrying a discharge folder.
How are we feeling, Mia? Dr. Vance asked gently, her eyes full of professional concern as she checked the monitor readings. Your blood pressure has stabilized, but you checked yourself out remarkably fast. Most mothers stay another twenty-four hours after a C-section.
I have an appointment to keep, Dr. Vance, Mia said, her voice steady and unyielding.
An appointment? Mia, you gave birth less than forty-eight hours ago. You shouldn't even be driving, let alone—
I’m not driving, Mia interrupted, gesturing toward the door where Marco—a towering, impeccably dressed security consultant Ryan had once employed, now entirely loyal to Mia—stood waiting quietly in the corridor. Marco has a car waiting. And baby Clara is coming with us.
Dr. Vance sighed, setting the clipboard down on the mattress. She looked over at the bassinet where the tiny infant was sleeping soundly, swaddled in a soft pink blanket.
Clara. A beautiful name, the doctor said softly. But Mia, I have to ask... are you certain about this? The man whose name is on that DNA test is getting married today in downtown Chicago. Throwing yourself into the middle of his wedding while recovering from major surgery is dangerous. Physically and legally.
It’s not dangerous, Evelyn, Mia said, a cold, dangerous smile touching her lips. It’s a deposition. And Ryan is about to find out what happens when you underestimate a woman you think you've broken.
Dr. Vance shook her head, though a faint smile of reluctant admiration crept across her face. Be careful, Mia. People with everything to lose are the most unpredictable.
I’m not the one who’s going to lose today, Mia replied, sliding the leather folder into her designer tote bag. He is.
Ten minutes later, Mia walked out of the hospital doors into the crisp Chicago autumn air. Clara rested securely in a specialized infant carrier clutched safely against Mia’s chest. Marco held an umbrella overhead, shielding them from the drizzle as they slid into the back of a black Mercedes-Benz idling by the curb.

To St. Jude’s Cathedral, Marco, Mia instructed, her eyes locked on the glowing screen of her phone displaying the wedding venue address.
Let’s go crash a wedding, Marco replied smoothly, putting the vehicle into drive.
