Chapter 7 - THE FALL OF AN EMPIREPanic erupted inside St. Jude’s Cathedral.

High-society guests scrambled out of the pews, tripping over formal gowns and expensive shoes as they rushed toward the exit. The fairy-tale wedding had transformed into a federal raid in less than five minutes.
Ryan stood frozen at the foot of the altar, his mouth moving silently as two federal agents stepped up on either side of him and slapped heavy steel handcuffs around his wrists.
This is a mistake! Ryan shouted, thrashing against the agents as they pulled his arms behind his back. You don't know who I am! I’m a partner in Vance-Brooks—
You were a partner until about ten seconds ago, Agent Vance said flatly, reading rights from a laminated card. Your corporate accounts were frozen by judicial order at eleven-fifteen this morning. Everything you own is currently being seized as proceeds of financial crime.
Lauren collapsed onto the marble floor, her expensive white veil trailing in the dust as female federal agents hauled her to her feet, cuffing her wrists behind her back while she wept hysterically into her lace bodice.
Mia stood quietly near the front pew, watching the spectacle with a cold, detached sense of closure. She didn't gloat. She didn't cheer. She simply watched the man who had tried to break her realize that his entire life had just collapsed into dust.
As Ryan was being dragged down the aisle past the rows of empty pews, his eyes locked onto Mia’s. His face was twisted in an expression of pure, unadulterated terror and humiliation.
Mia... please, Ryan choked out, his voice cracking as the agents shoved him toward the heavy oak doors. Please, talk to them. Drop the charges. We were married—we can fix this!
You wanted me to see what a real family looks like, Ryan, Mia whispered softly as he passed her, her voice carrying clearly in the emptying cathedral.
He stopped struggling for a fraction of a second, his eyes wide.
May you like
I came to show you mine, Mia continued, pulling her phone from her coat pocket and displaying a live feed from the security monitor in Marco’s car parked outside. On the screen, baby Clara was sleeping peacefully in her carrier, safe, healthy, and entirely free of the toxic legacy her father had tried to build.
Ryan stared at the screen, a low, broken sob escaping his throat before the federal agents shoved him through the doors and out into the blinding Chicago sunlight, where a convoy of unmarked police cars waited to take him away.
