Chapter 25 - THE MIDNIGHT CONFESSIONThe evening air in Greenwich was heavy with the scent of pine and summer rain. A sudden thunderstorm had rolled in off the lake, sending sheets of water cascading against the tall windows of the master suite.

Inside, the room was softly lit by a single reading lamp. Clara was fast asleep in her nursery down the hall, wrapped in a blanket while a baby monitor hummed quietly on the nightstand.
Mia sat curled up in an oversized velvet armchair, reading through international real estate portfolios, when a soft knock sounded at the door. Marcus walked in, holding two cups of steaming chamomile tea. He handed one to Mia, sitting down in the chair opposite her.
You’re working late again, Marcus observed, his gaze warm and attentive. The symposium in Washington isn't for another three weeks.
Mia set her tablet down on the side table, wrapping her hands around the warm ceramic mug. I’m not working, Marcus. I’m just... reviewing how far we’ve come. Sometimes it still feels surreal that less than two years ago, I was sitting in a hospital room in Chicago, listening to Ryan try to humiliate me over the phone.
Marcus leaned forward, resting his elbows on his knees. You didn't just survive that moment, Mia. You engineered the entire outcome. You took every ounce of pain, betrayal, and humiliation he tried to inflict and turned it into the foundation of something indestructible.
It’s strange, Mia murmured, looking out the rain-streaked window into the dark gardens below. For seven years, I thought my greatest failure was my inability to give Ryan what he wanted. I thought my body was broken because I couldn't carry a child on his timeline. And now... looking at Clara, looking at everything we’ve built... I realize my body wasn't broken at all. I was just tied to a man who had nothing inside him to nurture.

Marcus reached across the space between their chairs, placing his hand gently over hers. Ryan was searching for a trophy to validate his ego, Mia. He never knew how to love a real partner. But you didn't need his validation to become who you were always meant to be.
Mia looked down at his hand resting on hers, a soft, serene smile touching her lips. For the first time in her life, she didn't feel the phantom weight of old expectations. The past was completely gone, washed away by the rain outside and the unshakable reality of the life she had created with her own hands.
