Chapter 9 - The Trial of the Century

The federal courtroom was packed to absolute capacity. Journalists, financial analysts, and high-society elites crammed into every available bench to witness the fall of Washington’s most untouchable family.

At the defense table sat Evangeline, Thane, and Calliope, flanked by a battery of high-priced defense attorneys who looked entirely defeated. The mountain of evidence I had compiled—the secret offshore accounts, the forged medical records surrounding Genevieve’s death, the audio confessions captured on hidden wiretaps—was insurmountable.

The prosecution rested its case after three weeks of blistering testimony. When I took the witness stand as the star federal investigator and surviving victim of their psychological warfare, a pin drop could be heard in the silent courtroom.

I detailed every insult, every calculated humiliation, and every hidden crime. I looked directly at Thane, who sat with his head bowed, refusing to meet my eyes. He had tried to play the victim in police custody, claiming his mother forced him into everything. But the digital records showed he was an enthusiastic participant in every single crime, from financial embezzlement to the cover-up of murder.

"The defense would have you believe this was a tragic family dispute over a dinner table," I stated into the microphone, my voice steady and resonant. "It was never about food. It was about power, control, and the systemic elimination of anyone who dared to question their reign of terror. They believed their wealth and social standing placed them above the law. They were wrong."

When the jury returned after just two hours of deliberation, the verdict echoed through the courtroom like a thunderclap: Guilty on all counts.

Judge Henderson banged his gavel with absolute authority.

"Evangeline Sterling, you are sentenced to forty-five years without the possibility of parole. Thane Sterling, for your active participation in corporate homicide and systemic fraud, you are sentenced to thirty-five years. Calliope Sterling, fifteen years."

A collective gasp rippled through the gallery. Evangeline shrieked, collapsing into her lawyer's arms as the federal marshals swarmed the table, clicking the heavy handcuffs shut one final time.
