Chapter 17 - The Stranger at the Gates

Weeks after the opening of the Vance Center, I stood on the grand front veranda, watching families utilize the gardens that had once belonged exclusively to my abusers. A quiet footstep sounded on the marble stairs behind me. I turned to find an elderly woman standing there, wearing a simple wool coat and leaning heavily on a carved wooden cane. It was Martha, the former head housekeeper who had made that fateful midnight phone call warning me about the trap.
Tears welled in Martha’s aged eyes as she looked out over the thriving sanctuary. "I thought about coming forward years ago, Eloan," she whispered, her voice trembling. "When they did what they did to your father... I was a coward. I stayed silent because I needed the paycheck to feed my grandchildren. I never thought anyone would ever have the strength to tear this fortress down."
I stepped forward, gently placing a warm hand over her wrinkled, shaking fingers. "You made the call when it mattered most, Martha," I replied softly. "You gave me the first piece of the puzzle. Without you, the cycle never would have broken."
