Chapter 4 - The HomecomingWhen I pulled into the circular driveway of our sprawling estate on Oakridge Drive forty minutes later, the house was dark, silent, and imposing.

For a decade, this house had been my prison disguised as a palace. Every piece of furniture, every carefully curated room, every flower arrangement in the foyer—I had chosen it all. But it was a home built on quicksand, maintained by my labor while Jack used it as a backdrop for his double life with Cynthia Brooks and his parasitic family.

I unlocked the heavy mahogany front door and stepped inside. The alarm system beeped softly, waiting for my code. I entered it, watching the green light flash.

Within minutes of disarming the security system, the automated smart-home hub chimed. A priority notification flashed across the wall-mounted tablet in the kitchen: Unauthorized access attempt detected: Master Gate.

I poured myself a glass of sparkling water, walked over to the floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the front courtyard, and waited.

Headlights sliced through the darkness. A battered, blue sedan—obviously an emergency airport taxi—swerved up the driveway and slammed to a halt near the fountain.

The back door flew open, and Jack stumbled out, looking like a man who had aged ten years in a single hour. His charcoal-gray sport coat was rumpled, his tie was ripped half off, and his face was twisted in a mask of manic desperation. Behind him, Carol and Ashley tumbled out of the cab, screaming bloody murder at the driver, who was aggressively demanding payment in cash before handing over their luggage.

Jack rushed up the front steps, slamming his fist against the mahogany door.

"Megan! Megan, open the door! I know you’re in there!" his voice echoed through the intercom system. "Open the damn door right now! This is insane! You’ve ruined everything!"

I didn't move. I simply picked up my tablet, tapped the intercom icon, and turned on the outdoor speaker system.

"You're tracking dirt on the porch, Jack," I said, my voice projecting crisp, calm, and utterly devoid of warmth across the courtyard.

Jack froze, staring blindly at the security camera mounted above the doorbell. "Megan! Please—listen to me! It’s all a misunderstanding! Cynthia... Cynthia was just a business trip! A corporate delegation! Mom and Ashley were just tagging along for a family getaway! You blew this completely out of proportion!"

Down in the courtyard, Carol shoved her way past Jack, grabbing the intercom microphone herself.

"Megan, you ungrateful little brat!" Carol shrieked, her voice cracking with pure venom. "How dare you pull this stunt! Open this door right this second or I swear I will have you locked out of this family forever! You are nothing without my son! You hear me? NOTHING!"

I smiled, taking a slow sip of my sparkling water. The illusion was completely shattered. The masks were off. And the true nature of the Walker family was finally laid bare for the neighborhood to hear.
