Chapter 9 - The Phoenix RisesSix months later, the corporate world looked very different.

The headline in the Wall Street Journal wasn't about Jack Walker's downfall—though his trial had provided plenty of courtroom drama—it was about a massive restructuring within Vance Biotech.

Seated at the head of the polished mahogany board table in our newly redesigned downtown headquarters, I adjusted the cuffs of my tailored charcoal suit and looked out over a room filled with brilliant, ethical young researchers, medical pioneers, and corporate compliance experts.

"Thank you all for being here," I began, my voice clear, steady, and commanding the complete attention of everyone in the room. "Today marks a new chapter for Vance Biotech. We are launching a fifty-million-dollar grant initiative dedicated entirely to transparent, independent pediatric research—with mandatory, uncompromised auditing standards built into every single contract."

A ripple of respectful applause moved through the room.

My father’s legacy, which had been nearly corrupted by greed and deceit, was not only restored; it was stronger, sharper, and more untouchable than ever before.

After the meeting adjourned, I walked back to my corner office overlooking the sprawling Dallas skyline. The glass walls offered a breathtaking view of the city where I had built my life, lost my way, and ultimately found my true strength.

My phone on the desk buzzed once.

I glanced down at the screen. It was an automated notification from the federal prison system—a standard legal update regarding inmate correspondence. Jack had attempted to send a handwritten letter through his public defender, begging for a visit, pleading for forgiveness, claiming he had finally realized what he had lost.

Without a single second of hesitation, I pressed a single button on my screen.
