Chapter 8 - The Ashes and the HeirloomThree weeks later, the media storm had reached its peak. Headlines across national news outlets blared: EMINENT DALLAS SURGEON ARRESTED IN MULTI-MILLION DOLLAR FRAUD SCHEME; WIFE FILES FOR IMMEDIATE ANNULMENT AND ASSET SEIZURE.

The Oakridge estate was officially empty. The moving trucks had come and gone, stripping the sprawling mansion of every piece of furniture, every luxury decoration, and every reminder of a decade lost to deceit.

I stood alone in the grand foyer, wearing a simple black trench coat and sunglasses, holding a single cardboard box containing my personal belongings—family photo albums inherited from my father, my mother’s vintage gold pocket watch, and a handful of handwritten letters from my early days in research before I let myself be sidelined by marriage.

The front door unlocked with a quiet click. Gerald stepped inside, his expression solemn.

"The final papers have been signed by the judge," Gerald said quietly. "The marriage is officially annulled under fraudulent pretenses. Jack pled guilty to three counts of federal wire fraud this morning in exchange for a slightly reduced sentence. He’s looking at twelve years minimum at a federal penitentiary in West Texas."

I nodded slowly, feeling a profound, weightless sense of release wash over me. The invisible chains that had bound me to Jack Walker for ten long years were finally shattered.

"And Cynthia and Carol?" I asked.

"Cynthia has retained criminal counsel to fight her own obstruction charges, and Carol has retreated to a small apartment in Austin, desperately trying to sell her designer handbags online just to pay rent," Gerald answered. "They are completely isolated. No one is returning their calls."

I looked around the cavernous, empty foyer one last time. The echoes of hollow laughter, fake celebrations, and forced smiles seemed to fade into the bare walls, replaced by the crisp, clean silence of absolute truth.

"Good," I whispered.

I turned toward the open front door, stepping out into the bright September sunlight.
