Chapter 7 - The Unraveling of the AccomplicesWhile Jack sat in federal custody facing the wreckage of his crimes, his family was learning a harsh lesson in accountability across the city.

Carol and Ashley had tried to check into a luxury hotel near downtown Dallas using their usual credit cards, only to find themselves publicly escorted off the premises by security when the accounts were flagged as frozen assets linked to an ongoing federal seizure. With no cash, no valid credit, and no friends willing to answer their frantic calls—most of high-society Dallas had already caught wind of the scandal and blocked their numbers—they found themselves sitting on a park bench outside City Hall with their designer luggage piled around them like tragic monuments to their own greed.

Cynthia Brooks fared little better.

By noon the following day, the internal compliance division at DFW Medical had terminated her contract with immediate cause. Her office had been raided, her work laptop seized, and her name permanently blacklisted from every pharmaceutical firm in the country.

Sitting in a quiet corner booth of an upscale downtown cafe, I watched through the tinted window as Cynthia frantically scrolled through her phone, her face flushed with anger and humiliation.

The bell above the cafe door chimed softly as Gerald walked in, sliding smoothly into the booth opposite me. He placed a sleek manila folder on the table.

"The board accepted your formal petition this morning, Megan," Gerald said, signaling the waiter for a black coffee. "Vance Biotech is officially severing all ties with the hospital's research wing unless they completely restructure their compliance protocols. And the medical board has fast-tracked Jack's permanent disbarment hearing."

I opened the folder, scanning the crisp legal documents. "And the house?"

"Foreclosure and asset liquidation are already underway," Gerald replied. "The Oakridge estate will be put on the market next week. All proceeds from the sale, along with the recovered trust funds, are being redirected entirely into the Vance Charitable Foundation for Pediatric Surgery—ironically, the exact department Jack was embezzling from."

A genuine, bittersweet smile touched my lips. "Poetic justice."

"What about Jack's mother?" Gerald asked, raising an eyebrow. "They've been camping outside the federal courthouse all morning, demanding to speak to the prosecutor."

"Let them," I said, closing the folder with a soft snap. "They spent a decade treating my kindness as a weakness, believing they could build their golden parachute on my back. Let them see what happens when the safety net is pulled away."
