Chapter 6 - The Confession RoomThe interrogation room at the federal compliance office smelled of stale coffee, industrial cleaner, and crushed ambition.

Seated across the stainless-steel table was Jack. Gone was the charismatic, golden-boy surgeon who commanded operating rooms and charmed hospital donors. In his place was a broken, disheveled man in a wrinkled dress shirt, his eyes bloodshot and hollow.
I stood behind the two-way mirror in the adjacent observation room, arms crossed, watching every twitch of his nervous fingers.
Sitting across from Jack was the lead federal investigator, Agent Vance—no relation to my family, but possessing the same unyielding tenacity.
"Let's go over the timeline again, Dr. Walker," Agent Vance said, dropping a thick file onto the metal table with a heavy thud. "Between January 2022 and August 2026, roughly four point two million dollars in grant funding earmarked for pediatric surgical research was systematically funneled into offshore shell companies. Companies registered under the names of your mother, your sister, and your personal associate, Ms. Cynthia Brooks."
Jack stared blankly at the tabletop, his voice a hoarse whisper. "I... I don't know what you're talking about. Those were administrative accounts."
"Administrative accounts that happened to fund luxury condos in Miami, designer wardrobes, and first-class international travel for individuals who have zero medical credentials," Agent Vance replied smoothly. He slid a stack of printed bank statements and signed wire transfer authorizations across the table. "Your signature, Dr. Walker. Signed in ink, time-stamped, and verified by your own corporate IP address."
Jack looked down at the papers. His lower lip quivered. The walls he had spent a decade building around his lies were finally crushing him from all sides.
"Megan..." Jack muttered, staring blindly at the mirror where he knew I was standing. "Megan, please... talk to him. Tell them it was a mistake. Tell them you knew about the funds!"
I stepped closer to the glass, my reflection blending with his tormented face on the other side.
"Why would I lie for you, Jack?" I murmured softly to myself, knowing he couldn't hear my voice directly, but feeling the heavy weight of his gaze anyway.
"Your wife isn't here to save you this time, Doctor," Agent Vance said, echoing my thoughts. "In fact, your wife is the one who handed us the master decryption keys to your entire offshore network. Every shell company, every falsified audit report, every hidden asset—she documented it all over the last six months while you were busy planning vacations to Paris with Ms. Brooks."
Jack’s head snapped up, his eyes widening in pure disbelief. "She... she knew? All this time?"
May you like
"She knew," Agent Vance said flatly. "And now, you're looking at a minimum of fifteen years in federal custody for healthcare fraud, corporate embezzlement, and wire fraud."
Jack buried his face in his hands, letting out a ragged, broken sob that echoed off the bare concrete walls.
