Chapter 2 - The Crimson Ledger

The private security feed in the Moretti underground war room hummed with static. Rocco sat in his leather command chair, the baby resting in a makeshift bassinet lined with cashmere coats on the mahogany table beside him. Sophia refused to leave the room; she sat quietly in a corner, her small legs swinging slightly off the edge of an oversized chair, her eyes darting across every monitor.

"The system was wiped," the tech lead muttered, his fingers flying across the console. "Every camera feed from the east wing between 9:00 PM and 11:30 PM has been scrubbed. Someone used a master override key."

"A master override," Rocco repeated, his fingers tapping a rhythmic, deadly tattoo on the armrest. "Only three people on this earth possess that key. Myself, Valentina, and my late father."

"Or someone who copied it," Sophia chimed in softly.

Rocco looked at her, truly looking at her for the first time. Not as a maid's daughter, not as a background fixture of the estate, but as an observant entity who saw the gears of the machine others ignored. "Explain, child."

"My mother cleans the second-floor study every Tuesday," Sophia said, her voice entirely devoid of childish hesitation. "She told me once that the second master key doesn't stay in the safe. It stays in the velvet drawer behind the grandfather clock. But last month, Mrs. Valentina asked for the dusting schedule to be changed. She wanted the study cleaned on Mondays instead. She spent a long time near that clock."

Valentina, who had been locked in the adjacent drawing room under armed guard, began pounding on the glass partition. Her face was twisted into a snarl of pure venom, her polished facade completely obliterated.

Rocco stood up, walked to the glass, and slid open the acoustic panel.

"You fool, Rocco!" Valentina shrieked, her voice echoing through the bunker. "Do you think you rule this city because you're smart? The men backing me don't care about a dead baby or a stolen bracelet! They want the North Docks! They want the shipping routes! If you keep that bastard child alive, the Syndicate will burn this entire estate to the ground by dawn!"

Rocco stared at her with an absolute, chilling calm. "Then let them try. Because the child you tried to throw in the trash isn't just an heir, Valentina. He is the living proof that the syndicate council has been betrayed from within."

He turned back to the tech lead. "Pull up the private financial logs from the St. Helena Private Hospital foundation. Cross-reference every transaction involving Valentina’s maiden name with the accounts of our primary rival, the Savino family."

The screen flickered. A massive data cascade poured down the monitor. Rows of numbers, shell companies, and offshore wire transfers materialized. Valentina hadn’t just tried to get rid of a rival heir; she had been selling Moretti shipping coordinates to the Savinos for two years, funding her own shadow army right under Rocco’s nose.
