Chapter 7 - The Lake Infernal

At the edge of the estate’s private lake, the heavy rain hammered the dark water into a churning vortex. A sleek black motorboat drifted against the wooden dock, its engine idling quietly.
Sophia, Elena, and the consigliere burst through the heavy oak doors of the boathouse, the infant still safely secured against Sophia’s chest.
"Get in," the consigliere barked, untying the thick hemp ropes.
Suddenly, the red laser dots of sniper rifles flickered across the wooden floorboards around their feet. From the shadows of the surrounding cypress trees, four armed operatives stepped out, blocking the dock.
"End of the line, Moretti dogs," one of the operatives sneered, raising his rifle.
Sophia didn't blink. She stepped forward, holding the baby with one hand, while her other hand slid down to a loose floorboard beneath the dock's edge—a spot she had marked during her days of playing hide-and-seek along the estate's water line.
"You forgot about the fuel lines," Sophia said softly.
Before the operatives could pull their triggers, Sophia yanked a hidden brass lever connected to the estate’s underground emergency fuel reserves. A massive underground line, ruptured by design during the initial demolition sequence, flooded the surface of the lake around the dock with high-octane aviation fuel.
"What is that smell?" one operative panicked, lowering his gun as his boots splashed in the chemical slick.
Sophia pulled a box of waterproof matches from her pocket—stolen from the kitchen pantry hours ago—struck one against the rough wood, and dropped it into the water.
Whoosh!
An instantaneous wall of fire erupted across the surface of the lake, forming a brilliant ring of protective hellfire around the boathouse dock. The operatives screamed as the heat forced them to scatter into the woods, their tactical gear melting as they fled for their lives.

"Get in the boat! Now!" the consigliere yelled, shoving Elena and Sophia into the hull as he slammed the throttle forward.
The motorboat surged away from the burning dock, cutting through the dark waves toward the safety of the Verona highway.
