Chapter 10 - A New Dawn

Three months later, the Vane estate looked entirely different. The charred ruins of the old manor had been cleared away, replaced by the skeletal steel beams of a modern, open-concept home designed not as a fortress, but as a place where light could actually reach the floors.
Damian stood on the newly poured concrete patio, his black coat buttoned against the crisp autumn breeze. The three-meter stone walls around the perimeter had been lowered by half, the guard towers dismantled. Trust wasn't a currency he carried easily yet, but he was learning.
A small pair of arms wrapped around his knee.
Damian looked down. Lily stood there, her dark hair tied back with a neat blue ribbon, holding up a brand-new piece of white construction paper.
He knelt down on one knee, taking the paper from her small hands.
This time, there was no purple-black monster in the doorway. There was a bright yellow sun, a lopsided green house with an open front door, and two stick figures standing side by side—one tall and dark, one small and smiling.
"Is the bad man gone forever?" Lily asked, her voice innocent and clear.

Damian looked out past the open gates, where the morning sun was spilling golden light across the manicured lawn, reaching every single corner of the property where shadows used to hide.
"Yes, Lily," Damian smiled, lifting her up onto his shoulder the way a proper uncle—not a mafia boss—finally could. "He's gone. Forever."
