Chapter 23 - Shadows of the Past

She looked older, the sharp edges of her youth tempered by a quiet, haunted resilience, but those familiar hazel eyes remained entirely unchanged. She stood ten feet away from the barrel of his gun, completely unafraid.

"You always were quick to draw, Damian," Elena said, her voice soft, carrying a melodic cadence that time had barely eroded.

"You're dead," Damian whispered, the words tasting like ash. "I identified the ring. I buried the casket."

"You buried a casket filled with lead and bricks to satisfy your father's paranoia," Elena replied, taking a slow step forward. "Your father gave me a choice the night I discovered the syndicate’s financial ledger linking our family to the international arms trafficking ring: leave voluntarily and let the world think I died, or watch him eliminate my entire family one by one."

Damian didn't lower the gun. His mind raced, calculating every variable, every lie he had swallowed for a decade. "Why come back now? Why surface after four years?"

"Because your father is gone, Julian is gone, and Victor Thorne is neutralized," Elena said, her gaze locking onto his with absolute intensity. "And because someone inside your newly reformed corporation is still moving money through the exact same offshore channels that my father died trying to expose."

Before Damian could process the revelation, a muffled crash echoed from the upper levels of the manor—followed by the sharp, unmistakable crack of a suppressed gunshot.

Marcus’s voice hissed through the tactical comms link in Damian’s ear. "Boss! We’re breached! East wing perimeter is compromised!"
