Chapter 27 - The True Architect

"Uncle Arthur," Damian said, his voice like grinding ice. "I thought you were in Switzerland."

"Switzerland is terribly dull this time of year," Arthur replied, closing his pocket watch with a sharp click. He walked slowly down the stairs, ignoring the red laser dot resting against his sternum. "Besides, someone had to ensure the family business didn't go completely soft under your misguided attempts at legitimacy."

"You funded Julian. You backed Thorne," Damian said, stepping forward, his knuckles whitening around the grip of his rifle.

"Julian was an emotional wreck, and Thorne was a blunt instrument," Arthur sighed, stopping three steps above Damian. "Neither of them understood the fundamental rule of our world: empires aren't built on legitimacy or love. They are built on absolute, unyielding control. Your father forgot that. And you are trying to erase it."

"Father tried to get out," Damian said. "And you killed him through Julian."

"I merely suggested the recipe," Arthur smiled coldly. "Just as I am going to suggest your retirement today."

Before Arthur could finish his sentence, the windows behind him shattered inward in a shower of glass. Elena stepped through the broken frame from the exterior balcony, a silenced pistol locked dead on Arthur’s temple.

"The conversation is over, Arthur," Elena said, her voice steady and lethal.

Arthur didn't flinch. He simply smiled wider. "Ah, the resurrected ghost. You always were remarkably difficult to kill, Elena. But look around you. Did you really think I came alone?"

From the shadows of the upper hallway, four more Directorate operatives stepped out, their rifles leveling directly at Damian and Elena.
