The standoff froze the burning room in absolute tension. A single twitch of a finger on either side would unleash a hail of gunfire that no one in the room would survive.

Damian looked at Elena, then up at the operatives lining the gallery above. His mind raced through every tactical contingency, calculating angles, timing, and exits. There was no clean escape route. The Directorate had anticipated every move.
"You lose, Damian," Arthur whispered, reaching out to pluck the carbine gently from Damian’s unresisting hands. "The foundation, the corporate assets, the estate—all of it reverts to the senior surviving trustee. Me."
"You won't live long enough to spend it," a voice echoed from the bottom of the service stairwell.
Marcus stepped into the light, holding a heavy anti-materiel rifle pointed directly at the main structural pillar supporting the grand staircase.
"Marcus, don't," Arthur warned, his composure finally slipping just a fraction as he recognized the weapon. "That pillar holds the entire west wing. If you fire, this entire house comes down on all of us."

"That's the design of it," Marcus said grimly, his finger resting on the dual-stage trigger. "Boss taught me well. If we can't keep the house clean, we burn it to the ground."
Damian didn't hesitate. He lunged forward, tackling Arthur hard across the wooden floor just as Marcus pulled the trigger.
