Chapter 13 - The Chessboard Widens

Inside the command trailer parked near the eastern perimeter, Damian stared at the photograph of Victor Thorne while Marcus patched a secure satellite link into the national intelligence databases.

"Facial recognition confirms it's him," Marcus said, tapping a key on the ruggedized laptop. "Thorne didn't die in Marseille. He faked his death, handed his operations over to Julian as a proxy, and waited for us to tear ourselves apart. Now that Julian is out of the picture, Thorne is stepping out of the shadows to collect the entire syndicate."

"He thinks he’s stepping into an empire," Damian said quietly, his hand resting on the butt of his suppressed sidearm. "He’s walking into a graveyard."

"Don't underestimate him, boss. Thorne controlled the shipping lanes before your father even had a fleet. He has political backing in Geneva, intelligence assets in Washington, and enough liquidity to buy out half the men patrolling our walls."

Damian didn't reply. His mind flashed back to the crayon drawing—the shape with no eyes and no mouth. Julian hadn't acted alone. The psychological terror, the secret corridors, the infiltration of the staff—that was Thorne’s signature. Julian had been nothing more than a blunt instrument wielded by a master manipulator.

"Where is he now?" Damian asked.

"That's the problem," Marcus sighed, turning the screen around. "He’s not hiding. He’s currently sitting in the main pavilion, having a conversation with Clara and Lily."

Damian’s chair scraped violently against the metal floor as he surged to his feet, his tactical vest clattering against the desk. Without a word, he bolted out of the trailer, his boots pounding against the gravel path toward the guest cottage.
