Chapter 19 - The Return Home

Two days later, the sun shone brightly over the newly cleared grounds of the Vane estate. The federal authorities had cleared the remaining shell corporations, and for the first time in thirty years, the name Vane was officially untethered from the criminal underworld.Legitimate business accounts, clean audits, and a quiet, peaceful future lay ahead.
Damian walked across the newly laid grass of the courtyard, his black wool coat unbuttoned in the midday warmth.
From the front porch of the newly constructed main house, three-year-old Lily spotted him. Dropping her handful of colored crayons, she sprinted across the lawn as fast as her small legs could carry her, her laughter ringing clear and bright through the open air.
Damian knelt down just in time to catch her as she launched herself into his arms, burying her face against his shoulder.
Clara walked out onto the porch, watching them with a soft, genuine smile that reached her eyes for the first time in years.
Lily pulled back, holding up a brand-new piece of white construction paper. She pressed it into Damian’s hand with the same solemnity she had shown months ago in the dark study.
Damian unfolded it.
There was no purple-black monster. There was no weeping woman. There was only a bright yellow sun, a green house with a wide-open door, and three stick figures standing together under a cloudless sky.
"Is the bad man gone forever?" Lily asked, her voice innocent and full of absolute certainty.

Damian looked down at the drawing, then out past the open gates where the world stretched wide and clean before them.
"Yes, Lily," Damian smiled softly, lifting her up onto his shoulders. "He's gone. Forever."
