Chapter 22 - The Ghost in the Archives

The estate’s underground archives had survived the fire, protected beneath three feet of reinforced concrete. Damian walked down the spiral stone staircase alone, his footsteps echoing against the damp walls. The air smelled of old paper, mold, and forgotten secrets.
He unlocked the heavy steel door to the private family vault. Rows of black binders lined the metal shelves, holding the history of a family built on blood, acquisition, and betrayal.
He pulled the binder labeled 19-E: Elena.
Inside lay the original police report, photographs from the charred wreckage of a black sedan on a coastal highway, and the death certificate signed by a doctor who had retired to South America weeks after the funeral. Damian flipped the pages with steady, methodical fingers, his eyes scanning the details he had memorized four years ago.
Then he noticed what he had missed in his grief.
The VIN number of the car listed in the initial highway patrol dispatch did not match the VIN number recorded in the coroner’s final intake log. Two different vehicles. Two different chassis numbers.
Elena hadn't died in that crash. She had been spirited away. And the man who orchestrated it wasn't an anonymous enemy—it was his own father, utilizing the syndicate's ultimate protection protocol to hide someone who knew too much about the family's inner circle.
A soft sound echoed from the far corner of the vault—the scraping of a boot against concrete.
Damian’s hand instantly went to his holster, clearing the leather in a fluid, practiced motion. He swung around, leveling the Browning 9mm into the dim shadows between the shelving units.
"Step out where I can see you," Damian commanded, his voice cold enough to fracture glass.

A figure stepped from the darkness, hands raised casually in surrender. It wasn't an assassin. It was a woman wearing a heavy trench coat, her dark hair slightly damp from the underground humidity. As she lowered the collar, Damian’s breath caught in his throat.
Elena.
