Chapter 7 - The Final SignatureThe silence in the penthouse was suffocating. Sophia looked between Alexander and me, her face draining of all color as she realized the golden cage she had fought so hard to re-enter was actually sinking into the ocean.

“Alex,” Sophia stammered, backing toward the double doors. “What is she talking about? Are... are you actually broke? What about your apartment? What about the trust?”
Alexander didn't answer her. He couldn't. He was staring at me like a man who had just discovered the person he thought he owned was actually a viper wrapped in silk.
“The divorce papers are right here,” I said, tapping the final document on the counter with a manicured fingernail. “You sign them, you surrender all claims to the secondary trust assets, and I allow you and your little girlfriend to walk out of this building with the clothes on your back. Alexander’s hands trembled violently as he picked up the heavy fountain pen. He looked up at me one last time, his eyes pleading for a shred of the mercy I had wasted on him for two agonizing years.
“Erin... please. We were married. We had history—”

With a jagged, defeated breath, he pressed the pen to the paper and scribbled his name across the bottom line.
