Chapter 8 - The Price of ArroganceWithin ten minutes, Alexander and Sophia were gone. The heavy oak doors clicked shut behind them, sealing away two years of humiliation, silence, and misplaced loyalty. I stood alone in the center of the expansive penthouse, listening to the quiet hum of the New York morning.

My phone, a brand-new device unlinked from any of Alexander's tracking software, sat cleanly on the marble island.

Eleanor, the Fifth Avenue boutique manager who had handled my late-night shopping spree, stepped out from the private side corridor carrying a single, elegantly wrapped velvet box.

“The courier delivery has arrived, Mrs. Grant,” Eleanor said softly, offering a warm, knowing smile.

I opened the box to reveal the restored antique silver cuff link—the one I had spent months repairing, the one Alexander had tossed aside like trash. I hadn't given it to him last night. Instead, I had kept it safely tucked in my pocket, a reminder that some things of true value cannot be bought, forced, or broken by careless hands.

I picked up the cuff link, walked over to the floor-to-ceiling glass window, and dropped it into a small velvet pouch I wore around my neck.

My bank alerts began to ping again, but this time they weren't security flags or frantic text messages from terrified bankers. They were incoming deposits—millions in liquidated corporate shares transferring legally and cleanly into my independent account, establishing me as the primary majority stakeholder of Grant Enterprises' remaining solvent assets.
