Chapter 9 - A New EmpireSix months later, the corporate landscape of New York had entirely shifted.

The name on the massive glass monolith downtown was no longer just Grant Enterprises; it had been legally restructured and rebranded under its parent holding company: Vanguard Holdings. And sitting in the executive corner office on the forty-fifth floor—the very office Alexander once lorded over—was me.

Alexander was entirely out of the picture. Stripped of his trust, his name, and his social standing, he had drifted back into the shadows of Manhattan’s forgotten elite, working a mid-level compliance job at a firm that had bought up his remaining debts for pennies on the dollar. Sophia had vanished from his life within weeks of his financial collapse, proving that her loyalty had always been tied to a ledger rather than a person.

As for me, I no longer spent five hours cooking meals for men who wouldn't show up. I dined when I wanted, where I wanted, and surrounded myself with people who valued intellect, loyalty, and substance over superficial control.

One afternoon, as I stood by my office window watching the autumn leaves blow across the Hudson River, my secretary buzzed through the intercom.

“Mrs. Vanguard? There’s a man downstairs in the lobby asking for an audience. He says his name is Alexander Grant, and he claims he has something important to discuss regarding old times.”

I looked down at the polished mahogany desk, then touched the small velvet pouch resting against my collarbone where the antique silver cuff link safely hung.
