Chapter 2 - The Contract of Protection

The news cycle was dominated by the morning's headlines: GANGLAND SHOOTOUT AT CLEMENT STREET CAFÉ: TWO DEAD, ONE IN CRITICAL CONDITION.
No names were released regarding the high-profile target who had vanished from the scene before the police arrived. But Lena didn't need the news to tell her who he was. A quick search of the city's private business registries revealed the true terrifying scope of the man whose car she had bumped into.
Nikolai Voss wasn't just a wealthy businessman. He was the reigning head of the Voss Crime Family, a ruthless syndicate that controlled the eastern docks, global shipping lanes, and half the city’s underground financial networks.
Lena sat on her small, creaky bed, staring at her phone. Her hands wouldn't stop shaking. She had left her notebook—and her driver’s license, which was tucked inside the cover—at the café during the chaos. He had her address. He knew where she lived, where she studied, where her grandmother had worked.
At 2:00 PM, a knock echoed through her apartment door. Heavy. Rhythmic. Measured.
Lena froze. "Who is it?"
"Open the door, Ms. Park. It’s Marco. Mr. Voss sent me."
She hesitated, then slowly turned the deadbolt and pulled the door open an inch. Standing in the hallway was a towering man in an immaculate black suit, his face scarred and eyes utterly devoid of emotion. Behind him stood two other armed men, effectively blocking the hallway.
"Mr. Voss requests your presence," Marco said, holding out a soft wool coat. "It isn't a request for a payment, Ms. Park. It’s for your safety. The men who attacked the café yesterday were part of the Marcone family. They saw you with him. They believe you are a vulnerability."
"I don't know him!" Lena pleaded, her voice rising in panic. "I scratched his car! That's all! I have nothing to do with any of this!"
"To men like the Marcones, facts are irrelevant. Association is a death sentence," Marco replied coldly. "Pack a bag. You have five minutes."
Ten minutes later, Lena was sitting in the back of a blacked-out armored SUV, speeding through the torrential downpour toward the city’s most exclusive residential district. The vehicle pulled through massive wrought-iron gates into the courtyard of a sprawling estate overlooking the cliffs of the bay.
Inside, the estate was a fortress of concrete, steel, and high-end art. Masterpieces by Renaissance painters hung on the walls, illuminated by warm lighting. Standing before a floor-to-ceiling window overlooking the storm-tossed sea was Nikolai. His shoulder was tightly bandaged under a fresh white silk shirt.
He turned as she entered, dismissing his guards with a subtle wave of his hand.
"Ms. Park," Nikolai said quietly. "I apologize for the dramatic relocation. Circumstances required immediate action."
"You have to let me go," Lena said, taking a step back toward the doors. "I won't say anything to the police. I swear it! I just want my life back."
"Your life as you knew it ended the moment you signed your name to that note, Lena," Nikolai said, taking a slow step toward her. His dark eyes held a weight that almost made her catch her breath. "My enemies know your face. If you walk out of those gates today, you will be kidnapped, tortured, and used as leverage against me within forty-eight hours."
"Leverage?" Lena let out a bitter, breathless laugh. "Why would anyone use me as leverage against you? You don't care about me!"
"They don't know that," Nikolai said, stopping just inches from her. The scent of rain, expensive cologne, and copper hung around him. "They saw me shield you with my own body. In my line of work, saving a life is seen as an act of love. It is a sign of weakness."
He reached into his pocket and pulled out a leather folder, laying it on the mahogany desk between them.
"This is an agreement," Nikolai said. "You will stay here, at the estate, under my personal protection for thirty days until I eliminate the threat posed by the Marcone syndicate. In exchange, your debt is forgiven. I will pay off your university tuition, cover your apartment lease for three years, and secure your grandmother’s medical bills."
Lena stared at the legal documents on the desk. "And if I refuse?"
May you like
Nikolai’s expression hardened, a glimpse of the terrifying mob boss slipping through the polite facade.
"If you walk out that door, I cannot protect you. And I do not like leaving broken debts unresolved."
