Chapter 6 - Shadows of the Past

With Marco dead and the Marcone syndicate crippled by the dockside ambush, peace was restored to Nikolai’s empire—at least on the surface. Mrs. Park was safely settled in a private luxury medical facility under 24-hour guard, fully unaware of the criminal dealings surrounding her grandson-in-law’s world.
Lena had returned to Nikolai’s estate, but the atmosphere had shifted. She was no longer a prisoner. She was something far more complicated: his partner, his confidante, and the woman who held the heart of the most dangerous man in the city.
One afternoon, while Nikolai was away at a high-level meeting with city officials, Lena explored the estate's private archives in the basement—a place Marco had previously guarded.
Driven by a quiet curiosity to understand the man who had reshaped her life, she unlocked a reinforced steel cabinet using a key she had seen Nikolai hide in his study desk. Inside were personal records dating back fifteen years.
She pulled out a dusty blue leather binder labeled Project Horizon: 2011.
As she flipped through the yellowed pages, her blood ran cold.
Inside were police reports, accident reconstruction diagrams, and insurance settlement documents regarding a major vehicular accident that occurred fourteen years ago—the very accident that had killed her parents when she was seven years old.
Her fingers trembled as she read the driver’s name on the police report of the heavy transport truck that had crossed the median into her parents' sedan:
Driver: Nikolai Voss.
Lena dropped the binder. It hit the floor with a loud slap, papers scattering across the cold concrete floor.
Her parents hadn't died in a random, tragic accident. They had been killed by Nikolai when he was a young, rising lieutenant in the underworld, moving illegal cargo across state lines during a high-speed police pursuit.
Tears blinded her vision as she stumbled backward, her chest heaving as panic and betrayal choked her throat.
"Lena?"
She spun around. Nikolai was standing at the entrance of the vault, holding a bouquet of fresh white lilies—her favorite flowers.
He saw the open binder on the floor. He saw the horror and disgust in her eyes. The flowers slipped from his hand, scattering across the threshold.
"You knew," Lena choked out, her voice breaking into a sob. "All this time... you knew who I was!"
Nikolai closed his eyes briefly, his face pale, looking older than he ever had. "Lena... let me explain."
"Explain what?!" she screamed, tears streaming down her cheeks. "That you didn't hire me because of a scratch on your car?! That you didn't keep me here to protect me?! You did it out of guilt! I was the daughter of the people you murdered!"
"It was an accident!" Nikolai said, taking a step toward her, his voice desperate. "Fourteen years ago, I was a different man! I was carrying cargo for my father’s syndicate! My brakes failed... I tried to swerve, but the rain—God help me, Lena, I tried to avoid them!"
"Don't touch me!" Lena yelled, backing away until her shoulders hit the back wall. "Every touch, every kiss, every promise... it was all a lie! You were paying off a debt for killing my family!"
"I didn't know who you were when you left that note on my car!" Nikolai shouted, his voice cracking with emotion. "I swear to you on my life! When I ran your file after the parking lot incident, I saw your name. I saw your birthdate. I realized who you were. I brought you here because I wanted to save you from the world I created!"
May you like
"You didn't save me!" Lena cried, her heart breaking into a thousand jagged pieces. "You trapped me!"
She shoved past him, running up the stairs toward the rain-swept courtyard. Nikolai didn't stop her. He stood alone in the dark vault, surrounded by the ghosts of his past, as the heavy wooden doors slammed shut behind her.
