Chapter 4 - The Golden Cage Cracks

The secret passageway led deep down into the foundation of the estate, emerging into an underground garage equipped with high-performance vehicles and tactical gear. Smoke filtered down through the ventilation shafts as the sound of muffled explosions echoed from above.
Nikolai shoved Lena into the passenger seat of a reinforced, bulletproof SUV. He jumped into the driver's seat, hit the ignition button, and rammed the vehicle through the heavy iron security gates of the underground exit, breaking out onto the stormy coastal highway.
"Where are we going?" Lena cried out, clinging to the dashboard as the vehicle careened around tight cliffside turns at over ninety miles per hour. "Who leaked those codes?"
"Someone close to me," Nikolai gritted out, his knuckles white on the steering wheel. His jaw was clenched so tightly a muscle twitched in his cheek. "A mole in my inner circle. They didn't just target my business, Lena. They targeted you. Which means whoever betrayed me knows that you’re my weakness."
Lena looked at him, her chest rising and falling rapidly. "Your weakness? Nikolai... why are you doing all of this for me? I’m nobody! I scratched your car!"
Nikolai stomped on the brakes, pulling the SUV into a dark, abandoned warehouse complex by the abandoned rail yards. The engine died, leaving only the sound of heavy rain hammering against the armored roof.
He turned to her, his gray eyes burning with an intense, raw emotion she had never seen before.
"Because the moment I read that stupid, handwritten note on my windshield, I realized something," Nikolai said, his voice raw. "I realized I had spent twenty years surrounded by men who would sell my soul for a dollar, and yet a girl with sixty dollars in her bank account was willing to sacrifice everything just to keep her integrity intact. You were the first real thing I had touched in half a life, Lena. I won't let them destroy you."
Lena stared at him, her breath catching in her throat. The distance between them vanished as Nikolai reached out, his long fingers gently cupping her cheek. His touch was warm, surprisingly tender for a man whose hands carried so much blood.
Lena didn't pull away. Instead, she leaned into his touch, her heart pounding a frantic rhythm against her ribs. When his lips met hers, it was a sudden, explosive collision of longing, fear, and desire. He kissed her deeply, possessively, as if trying to anchor her to him amidst the storm raging outside.
When he finally pulled back, both of them were breathing heavily.
Suddenly, the vehicle’s console lit up with an incoming encrypted call. Nikolai answered it, clicking the speaker button.
"Nikolai..." a voice rasped over the speaker, distorted by a voice scrambler. "Did you enjoy the fireworks at your estate?"
Nikolai’s eyes turned to ice. "Speak, coward."
"You’re slipping, Voss. Protecting a helpless art student? You’ve gotten soft. Check your phone. I just sent you a present."
Nikolai tapped his mobile screen. A live video feed popped up.
Lena leaned over to look—and let out a blood-curdling scream.
On the screen was a dim room. Tied to a chair, unconscious and bloody, was her seventy-two-year-old grandmother. Standing over her was a man holding a syringe.
"You have two hours, Nikolai," the distorted voice sneered. "Bring us the master encryption keys to the eastern waterfront shipping network, or the old woman dies. And don't bother tracking this signal... or we’ll send her to you piece by piece."
The line went dead.

Lena collapsed into tears, her hands trembling violently as she grabbed Nikolai’s coat. "Please! Nikolai, please save her! She’s all I have left! I’ll do anything! Please!"
Nikolai pulled her into his arms, his eyes filled with a lethal, terrifying resolve. "I will bring her back, Lena. Even if I have to burn this entire city to the ground."
