Chapter 3 - The Art of Deception

Life inside the Voss estate was a surreal nightmare draped in gold and velvet. For a week, Lena was confined to the western wing of the mansion. She was treated like a queen by the domestic staff, yet watched around the clock by armed guards.
Nikolai was rarely seen during the day. He ran his empire from a subterranean command center beneath the house, orchestrating hostile takeovers, weapon shipments, and covert warfare against the rival Marcone family. Yet every evening at precisely eight o'clock, he would join her for dinner in the grand dining room.
What began as tense, silent meals gradually evolved into something else.
Lena quickly realized that despite his violent world, Nikolai possessed a brilliant, refined mind. He noticed details no one else did. He noticed that she barely touched the seafood, preferring simple dishes. He noticed how her eyes lingered on the 17th-century oil painting in the library—a work she instantly identified as a clever, high-grade forgery.
"How did you know?" Nikolai asked one evening, leaning over her shoulder as she stood in front of the framed canvas in his study. The warmth of his breath hit her neck, sending a sudden flutter through her veins.
"The crackle pattern on the varnish," Lena pointed out, her finger hovering inches from the canvas. "It’s too uniform. Authentic age cracks follow the natural movement of the wooden stretcher bars behind the canvas over decades. Whoever painted this forced the drying process with synthetic heat. It’s beautiful, but it’s a fake."
Nikolai was quiet for a moment. "I paid two million dollars for that piece three years ago from a gallery in Geneva."
Lena turned her head, suddenly panicked. "I... I’m sorry. I shouldn't have said anything."
To her shock, Nikolai laughed—a rich, genuine sound that transformed his hardened face, making him look breathtakingly handsome. It was a sound his own lieutenants hadn't heard in years.
"Don't apologize for telling the truth, Lena," he said softly, looking down into her eyes. "Truth is the rarest commodity in my world. Everyone lies to me to stay alive, to gain power, or to steal my wealth. You are the only person in this city who looks at me without an agenda."
Lena felt her heart race, not out of fear, but from the electric tension crackling between them. Step by step, she was slipping into his orbit, fascinated by the duality of the man—a monster to the world, yet surprisingly gentle with her.
The moment of quiet intimacy was shattered when Marco burst into the study, his face pale and slick with sweat.
"Boss! We have a problem at the northern vault!" Marco reported hastily. "The Marcones just launched an attack on the docks. But that’s not all... someone leaked our perimeter security codes for this house. They know she’s here."
Nikolai’s laughter vanished instantly, replaced by a cold, deadly rage. "Who had access to the master codes?"
"Only your inner circle, boss," Marco said, casting a suspicious glance at Lena. "Or someone who’s been wandering the estate unescorted."
Nikolai stepped in front of Lena, shielding her from Marco’s accusing glare. "Check the surveillance logs immediately. Set the estate on lockdown."
Before Marco could reply, the emergency lights flared red, and a deafening siren echoed through the mansion. The glass windows of the study shattered inward as tactical flashbangs detonated in the courtyard.

"They’re inside!" Marco yelled, drawing his weapon.
Nikolai grabbed Lena by the waist, lifting her off her feet as heavy gunfire raked through the study walls. "Hold on to me!" he roared, pulling her into a hidden passageway concealed behind the library bookshelf just as the doors were kicked off their hinges.
