Chapter 19 - The New Foundation

Six months later, the San Ángel estate looked entirely different.

The dark, gloomy shutters that had remained closed for decades had been ripped away, replaced by large, sparkling glass windows that let the golden afternoon sunlight flood every corner of the historic mansion.

The sprawling front lawn, once a desolate wasteland of dead ivy and neglected weeds, was now filled with vibrant flowerbeds, modern playground equipment, and the happy, echoing laughter of children learning to paint, read, and play music.

Inside the main hall, a grand plaque made of polished bronze had been mounted on the wall right beside the entrance. Engraved upon it were the words:

The San Ángel Children’s Arts and Education Foundation. Dedicated to the preservation of community, kindness, and hope. Founded by Mara Rivas-Vance and Andrés Vance.

I stood on the second-floor balcony, watching Andrés help Sofia build a towering sculpture out of colorful wooden blocks on the rug below. Sofia was laughing hysterically as the tower wobbled and crashed down into a colorful explosion of geometric shapes.

Andrés looked up, catching my eye from across the room, and flashed a warm, knowing smile that made my heart feel lighter than it had in my entire life.

My phone vibrated in the pocket of my linen dress.

It was a text message from the head nurse at the private care facility where Leticia was staying.

“Mrs. Vance, your mother had a peaceful afternoon today. She ate her lunch, sat in the garden for an hour, and asked me to tell you that the yellow roses you sent her are blooming beautifully.”

I stared at the screen for a moment, a quiet, peaceful warmth settling deep inside my chest.

I didn't reply. I simply locked my phone, slipped it back into my pocket, and turned away from the past.
