Chapter 39 - The Unbroken Light

The sun dipped slowly behind the colonial roof of San Ángel, painting the evening sky in brilliant shades of amber, violet, and gold.

The estate hummed with the soft, beautiful music of an acoustic guitar played by one of the foundation’s young music students. Children chased fireflies across the lawn, their laughter echoing through the open archways where heavy iron gates once stood to keep the world out.

I stood on the front steps, taking a deep breath of the warm evening air.

My past had been a prison of glass and stone, built by a family that measured human worth by ledger entries and social status. But out of the wreckage of their cruelty, we had built something infinitely stronger: a home defined by kindness, resilience, and unconditional love.

Andrés walked up behind me, wrapping his arm around my waist and pulling me close against his side.

“What are you thinking about, Mara?” he asked softly.

I looked up at him, smiling as Sofia ran past us, laughing into the evening breeze.

“I was thinking,” I whispered, “that some Easter gifts don't come wrapped in gold or money... they come in the form of the strength to walk away, and the grace to build something better.”
