Chapter 46 - The Quiet Corner

Away from the cheering crowds, near the old stone fountain where the garden pathways converged, I noticed a solitary figure standing quietly by the rosebushes.
It was Paulina. She had been invited by the foundation's outreach coordinator to attend the anniversary as a recognized staff member of the community kitchen.
I walked over, stepping softly across the cobblestones.
“Enjoying the festival, Paulina?” I asked.

Paulina turned, holding a small paper cup of lemonade. A gentle, genuine smile touched her lips—the first real smile I had seen on her face since our childhood.
“It’s beautiful, Mara,” she said softly. “I never understood what Mom was trying to protect until I realized she was guarding an empty shell. You gave this place a beating heart.”
