Chapter 11 - The Unlocked LedgerThe crackling fire in the master study cast long, dancing shadows against the mahogany bookshelves, but the warmth of the hearth did little to soothe the sudden chill that settled over Daniel’s shoulders. He looked down at Evelyn, whose fingers had frozen against the fabric of his sleeve.

"What do you mean?" Daniel asked quietly, sensing that the nightmare they thought they had buried in federal custody was reaching its bony fingers back out toward them.
Evelyn slowly sat up, her eyes wide with a sudden, dreadful realization. "Vanessa wasn't working alone, Daniel. When she dragged me down into that cell five years ago... she wasn't just improvising. She was reading off a tablet. A ledger."
Daniel’s brow furrowed. "A ledger of what?"
"Financial accounts, shell corporations, forged signatures," Evelyn whispered, her voice trembling as fragmented memories rushed back. "She kept talking about a 'silent partner'—someone who financed the construction of that soundproof cell, someone who helped her secure the fake death certificate through a corrupt magistrate in Geneva."
Before Daniel could digest the horrifying implication, a sharp, metallic ping echoed from the hallway.
Ping. Ping. Ping.
It was the automated security terminal by the front foyer. A security alert.
Daniel stood up instantly, his instincts flaring. He grabbed a heavy brass candlestick from the mantelpiece and motioned for Evelyn to stay behind the heavy oak desk. "Lock this door from the inside," he instructed in a low, steely whisper. "Do not open it for anyone unless you hear my voice."
Creeping out into the dimly lit hallway, Daniel kept his footsteps silent against the Persian runner. The mansion was deadly quiet. The storm outside had cleared, leaving behind an eerie, moonlit stillness.
He approached the main foyer. The massive front security monitors flickered to life.
On the screen, parked right outside the wrought-iron security gates of the estate, sat an unmarked black sedan. Its headlights were completely turned off. But that wasn't what made Daniel’s blood run cold.
Standing right at the base of the keypad by the pedestrian gate, illuminated by the pale moonlight, was a figure in a tailored black suit. The person raised a gloved hand and pressed a code into the keypad.
