Chapter 5 - The Hidden Arsenal"There’s got to be a way out of here," Daniel muttered, scanning the cluttered shelves of old boxes, forgotten furniture, and tools stacked in the storage room.

Evelyn, still recovering her strength, pointed a trembling finger toward the back corner of the hidden cell she had occupied for five years. "When... when Vanessa used to bring me water and scraps of food through the service chute, she dropped a ring of maintenance keys once. I managed to kick it under the floorboards before she noticed."

Daniel’s eyes lit up. "Where?"

Evelyn crawled over to a loose wooden panel beneath a wooden crate, lifting it easily. Reaching inside, she pulled out a heavy, rusted ring holding at least a dozen different master keys.

"You're incredible," Daniel breathed, kissing her forehead before taking the keys and rushing back to the heavy metal door.

He jammed the first key into the external deadbolt keyhole—which, miraculously, Vanessa had left unlocked on the outside while frantically fleeing, only sliding the security latch home. With a satisfying click, the heavy bolt slid backward.

Daniel pushed the door open wide, flooding the hallway with light. He scooped Lily up into his arms and extended his hand to Evelyn, helping her stand. "Come on. We're going to the master office. That's where her private safe and the backup communication relays are."

They moved swiftly through the sprawling hallways of the mansion. The house was deathly quiet, save for the ticking of grandfather clocks and the distant sound of wind howling outside.

As they reached the heavy oak double doors of Daniel’s executive study, they noticed the door was cracked open. A faint blue glow emanated from inside, accompanied by the clicking of keyboard keys.

Daniel motioned for Evelyn and Lily to stay back against the wall. He crept forward silently, peering around the edge of the doorframe.

Vanessa was sitting at his mahogany desk, her fingers flying across his custom terminal. On the main wall monitor, a massive corporate wire transfer was flashing in bright red numbers: $45,000,000.00 PENDING FINAL BIOMETRIC AUTHORIZATION.

Beside her on the desk sat a packed leather duffel bag stuffed tight with bundles of hundred-dollar bills, diamond jewelry, and fake passports bearing different identities.

Vanessa muttered to herself, clicking furiously. "Come on, come on... just verify the retina scan..."

Daniel didn't wait another second. He kicked the double doors wide open, the heavy wood slamming against the interior walls with a deafening crack.
