Chapter 6 - CheckmateVanessa gasped, spinning around in the leather desk chair so fast she nearly tipped it over. Her eyes bulged in pure horror as she saw Daniel standing there—unharmed, holding little Lily, with Evelyn standing right beside him like a ghost returned from the grave.

"No! That's impossible!" Vanessa screamed, scrambling backward out of the chair and tripping over the edge of the Persian rug. She hit the floor hard, scrambling crab-like away from them. "You were locked in! How did you get out?!"

"Did you really think a cheap lock could keep me away from my family?" Daniel stepped into the room, his voice echoing with dangerous authority. He set Lily down gently behind him, keeping his eyes locked on Vanessa.

Evelyn stepped forward into the light of the study, her posture straightening despite her frailty. A quiet, fierce dignity radiated from her. "It’s over, Vanessa. The five years are up, but your game is done."

Vanessa’s chest heaved. Her face twisted into a mask of pure, unadulterated venom. She realized in that instant that she had lost everything—her wealth, her freedom, her carefully constructed facade.

Suddenly, a manic grin spread across her lips. Her hand slid slowly toward her coat pocket. "You think you've won? You think I'm going to prison?"

Before Daniel could react, Vanessa whipped her hand out of her pocket. She wasn't holding a gun—she was holding a heavy, industrial glass cutter, which she slammed directly into the side panel of the massive indoor aquarium built into the study's structural wall.

CRACK!

Thick, reinforced aquarium glass splintered instantly under the blow. Before anyone could shout a warning, thousands of gallons of water burst forth in a torrential wave, smashing across the room, sweeping furniture aside, and plunging the study into absolute chaos.
