Chapter 17 - Checkmate in the Server Vault"Stop right there, Julian!" Commander Thorne roared, stepping out of the aisle with his assault rifle raised and aimed squarely at Julian’s chest. "Federal agents! Hands where we can see them!"

Julian didn't even flinch. He didn't turn around. He just continued typing for three agonizing seconds before slowly swiveling around in his ergonomic chair.

A chilling, unhinged smile spread across his face. He held his right hand up, resting directly over a red biometric override switch embedded in the desktop console.

"Ah, Commander Thorne. And look who brought a guest," Julian mocked, his eyes shifting past the tactical team to spot Daniel standing in the shadows of the aisle. "Daniel. I told you not to follow me."

"It's over, Julian," Daniel said, stepping past the agents, his weapon raised. "The building is completely surrounded by federal tactical units. You have nowhere to run, and the asset purge is locked by federal mandate."

Julian laughed—a harsh, barking sound that echoed off the cold steel server racks. "Surrounded? Daniel, you really think I’m stupid enough to come here without a contingency plan?"

Julian pressed his thumb harder against the biometric switch.

"If I take my thumb off this scanner, or if my heart monitor stops beating, a dead-man’s switch triggers an instant hard-drive magnetic wipe across every single physical server in this room," Julian whispered, his eyes gleaming with mad triumph. "That means every patent, every financial record, every single cent of Vanguard’s valuation vanishes into thin air. You’ll be left standing in the ruins of an empty shell, owing billions in debt. You'll lose everything—again."

The tactical agents exchanged tense glances. Commander Thorne lowered his rifle slightly, his eyes narrowing. "Don't do it, Vance. Prison is better than a pine box."

"Prison?" Julian sneered. "I’d rather burn the world down than let a desk-jockey like Daniel walk away with the throne."

Daniel stared at Julian across the cold expanse of the server room. His heart pounded, but a cold, deadly calm washed over him. He remembered the dark, suffocating storage room. He remembered Evelyn’s tears. He remembered Lily’s terrified voice.

"You think you're the smartest guy in the room, Julian," Daniel said softly, taking a slow step forward.

"I know I am," Julian grinned.

"You forgot one critical variable," Daniel said, his lips curling into a tight, humorless smile.

Julian’s grin faltered slightly for a fraction of a second. "What are you talking about?"

"You assumed I came here alone to stop you," Daniel replied smoothly.

Suddenly, the red warning lights on the main console flickered, sputtered, and turned solid blue. The progress bar froze at 94%.

Julian’s eyes widened in horror. He slammed his other hand onto the keyboard, typing frantically. "What?! No! That’s impossible! The firewall encryption is immutable!"

From the speakers overhead, a calm, synthetic automated voice announced: "REMOTE OVERRIDE ACCEPTED. SECURE BACKUP PROTOCOL ENGAGED FROM OFF-SITE TERMINAL. WELCOME, ADMINISTRATOR EVELYN VANCE."

Julian spun around to stare at the monitor, his face draining of all color. "Evelyn...?"
