Chapter 8 - Sirens in the NightWithin minutes, the wail of approaching police sirens cut through the stormy night air. Red and blue emergency lights flashed violently against the rain-slicked windows of the mansion, painting the flooded study in stark, flashing colors.

Heavy footsteps echoed up the grand staircase as tactical police officers and federal agents flooded the hallway, weapons drawn.
"Freeze! Police! Drop your weapons!" an officer shouted, bursting out onto the balcony.
Daniel immediately raised his hands, stepping back from Vanessa, who lay sprawled on the concrete, panting, her hair plastered to her face, defeated at last.
"She’s the one," Daniel said, pointing down at Vanessa as two officers moved in to snap heavy steel handcuffs around her wrists. "She’s wanted for kidnapping, identity fraud, and attempted murder."
As Vanessa was hauled roughly to her feet, she glared back at Daniel with eyes full of pure poison. "You think prison can hold me? You’ll regret this, Daniel! You both will!" Her manic laughter echoed down the hallway as the officers dragged her away into custody.
Inside the study, medical personnel rushed in with emergency blankets and stretchers. Evelyn was wrapped warmly and seated on a dry couch, while paramedics checked her vital signs.
Lily ran over, burying her face in Evelyn’s lap. "Mommy... you're really here?"

Evelyn wrapped her arms around her daughter, sobbing tears of pure joy as she kissed the top of Lily’s head over and over again. "I'm here, my sweet angel. I'm never, ever going away again."
Daniel walked over, kneeling beside them. He took both of their hands in his, feeling a profound, overwhelming sense of peace wash over him for the first time in five years. The nightmare was finally over.
