Chapter 13 - The Silent PartnerDaniel coughed, clutching his chest as he pushed himself up against the wall, his eyes blazing with fury. "Julian... You son of a bitch."

Julian Vance was not just any acquaintance; he was Daniel’s former senior vice president and the man who had supposedly retired to Switzerland three years ago to manage European acquisitions.
"The very same," Julian said, casually brushing a speck of dust off his immaculate wool coat. He walked over to the grand staircase, looking around the mansion with an air of arrogant ownership. "I must say, Daniel, you have quite the eye for interior design. Too bad you’re such an absolute amateur when it comes to corporate security."
"You financed the cell," Daniel rasped, his voice dripping with venom. "You helped Vanessa trap Evelyn."
Julian chuckled softly, turning to face him. "Financed it? My dear Daniel, I designed it. Vanessa was ambitious, yes, but she lacked the... intellectual rigor required to execute a multi-million-dollar corporate hostile takeover disguised as a tragic family accident. She needed a strategist. She needed me."
From the top of the grand staircase, a soft gasp broke the tension.
Julian’s eyes flicked upward. Standing on the landing, wrapped in a silk robe with her face pale and wide-eyed, was Evelyn. She had disobeyed Daniel's orders to stay locked away.
"Evelyn," Julian smiled, his tone dripping with fake warmth. "My, oh my. Rumors of your demise were greatly exaggerated, weren't they? Though I must admit, you look a bit more... fragile than you did at our last board dinner."
"Stay away from her, Julian!" Daniel roared, pushing off the wall and lunging toward the stairs, but Julian was already moving.
With lightning-fast reflexes, Julian reached into his coat and pulled out a suppressed firearm, leveling the barrel directly toward Evelyn on the landing.
"Ah-ah-ah," Julian clicked his tongue, his eyes cold as ice. "One step closer, Daniel, and your resurrected wife goes right back to the dark. Permanently this time. No second chances."
Daniel froze mid-stride, his chest heaving. Sweat dripped down his temples. "What do you want, Julian? You already lost. Vanessa is in federal custody. The wire transfer failed."
May you like
"Failed?" Julian laughed softly. "Daniel, you truly are a technocrat living in a dream world. The wire transfer you saw on the screen three months ago was a decoy. A distraction to keep you occupied while the real assets—your international patent portfolios, your offshore holdings, and the controlling shares of Vanguard Technologies—were quietly transferred into a blind trust registered in the Cayman Islands under my name."
Julian stepped closer to the foot of the stairs, keeping the gun trained steadily on Daniel. "The game isn't over, Daniel. It’s just entering its final round."
